Joker - Live at Sonar (2009)

If I haven't made it clear yet, Joker is fucking running shit in the dubstep scene. He just layed down arguably the best set at this years Sonar fest in the UK. Sorry, no tracklisting. Enjoy.

5 Good Girl / Carrots (12:42)
6 Search For Delicious (4:53)
7 Ponytail (2:05)

Panda Bear is one of the founding members of the electronic band, Animal Collective. This album is mostly previously released material, so its kinda like the Best of Panda Bear. Panda Bear blends indie rock with experimental and electronic, creating the perfect album for summertime vibes. Not that I care, but some of you might... Pitchfork awarded this album the best album of 2007.

The Bloody Beetroots are an electrohouse duo from Italia. They've put out a few EPs (I might up a few later) but this is their first LP. Their throbbing bass and vicious synths murder dancefloors across the world, so put the cake in the trunk, everybody get down.

Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Blackstar is arguably the most essential 'conscious' hip hop record out there. The majority of the production is done by Hi-Tek, with the remainder done by Shawn J. Period and J Rawls. Common makes a well deserved appearance on track 11 - Respiration. RAWKUS!

10 Get Your Regal On (3:43)
11 Cheer Up You're Not Dead Yet (4:45)
12 Trailer Love (5:41)
13 NYC Bounce (4:24)

Blockhead is probably most well known for his work producing tracks for Aesop Rock. He is currently signed to Ninja Tune where he releases solo material. This album is filled with high quality beats that put a new spin on the old-school hip-hop sound.

Radiohead - OK Computer (1997)

1 Airbag (4:44)
2 Paranoid Android (6:23)
3 Subterranean Homesick Alien (4:27)

9 Climbing Up The Walls (4:45)
10 No Surprises (3:48)
11 Lucky (4:19)
12 The Tourist (4:25)

Although this album was released only 3 years prior to Kid A, the feel is completely different. The album is more rock oriented and received more airplay because of it. Most people remember this album for Karma Police's radio success and Paranoid Android's ridiculous video.

Radiohead - Kid A (2000)

1 Everything In Its Right Place (4:11)
2 Kid A (4:44)
3 The National Anthem (5:51)
4 How To Disappear Completely (5:56)
5 Treefingers (3:42)
6 Optimistic (5:16)
7 In Limbo (3:31)
8 Idioteque (5:09)
9 Morning Bell (4:35)
10 Motion Picture Soundtrack (7:01)

Kid A is, imo, the best Radiohead album to date. Each track flaunts its own personality and seamlessly combines various rock and electronic genres, like IDM and alternative rock. The tracks are very structured which is amazing given the general spaceyness in their tone.

Zomby - Spliff Dub (and the remixes)

Aight, here's a huge track that I've been obsessed with for quite some time now. Zomby created this with a sample from Billy Boyo's One Spliff a Day, and its insightful "One spliff a day keep the evil away" chant. After Zomby's original, it was remixed by Sukh Knight and Starkey who created their own dubstep versions, and of course Rustie who created a weird tech-dubstep vibe. Big ups to everyone.

Zomby - Where Were U in '92

1 Fuck Mixing, Lets Dance (3:00)
2 Euphoria (3:27)
3 We Got The Sound (1:57)
4 Daft Punk Rave (1:02)
5 Tears In The Rain (4:34)
6 Get Sorted (2:18)
7 G.T.i (1:26)
8 Float (3:19)
9 Need Ur Lovin' (2:24)
10 Pillz (4:21)
11 Hench (2:24)
12 B With Me (3:52)
13 Where Were U In '92? (2:04)
14 U Are My Fantasy (Street Fighter II Theme RMX) (2:03)

This, my friends, is a homage to the early 90's, the golden years of the hardcore rave culture. Before the RAVE Act and before guidos invaded the clubs, there was unadulterated hardcore breakbeat techno tunes. Yes, Zomby is a dubstep producer, but in this interview he talks about his love for hardcore and why he made this record. Even if you don't know anything about this style, just give it one listen.

11 Brass Monkey (2:37)
12 Slow And Low (3:38)
13 Time To Get Ill (3:37)

The Beastie Boys released this heavy hitter in 1986. 1986 god damn it. It broke sales records, told people they have a right to party, and instructed people on the proper way to drink brass monkey. Not only that but it was produced by Rick Rubin, imo the greatest producer of our generation.

Skream - Galassia (2008)

Skream has done it again. Well, this time its not dubstep. Following greats like Aesop Rock, A-Trak, Simian Mobile Disco, and LCD Soundsystem, Skream produced this track for Nike's project Nike+. Pretty cool concept. This was designed for runner's motivation. Skream has a tech and house feel during the first half of the track and gradually fades into trance. Again, not dubstep, but still great work.

The Join is members of The New Deal, Darren Shearer (drums) and Jamie Shields (keys). They toured with various special guests but on this night they played with Marc Brownstein (bass) and Aron Magner (keys) of The Disco Biscuits.

Buju Banton, dancehall toaster, reggae musician, and all around rude bwoy, comes straight out of Kingston, Jamaica. This album marked a turning point in Banton's career, shifting from dancehall vibes to a live band with a much more roots reggae feel where he reached a more mainstream audience. Still though, he drops heavy hitting vocals with one of the most distinct voices in the industry.

Dub is a Weapon - Dub is a Weapon (2003)

Dub is a Weapon is a New York based dub band that quickly created ties with dub man, myth, and legend Lee 'Scratch' Perry. The band was founded by Dave Hahn, most well known for playing guitar in the Antibalas. It is pretty hard for me to gather any information on this album, but I recall it being produced by Perry himself, but don't quote me on that. They've also been touring extensively with him, showing the world that white kids from NYC can play dub too.

8 Vision Of Dub (4:19)
9 Dub It With You (3:37)
10 Conviction Or A Dub (4:35)

There's something special about this album that I can't quite put my finger on. This is not your standard, garden-variety dub record; this is unusually upbeat with haunting vocals and lots of not-so-dub percussion.

Aesop Rock continues his stream-of-consciousness rapping technique, but this time on the Def Jux label. Other label members, Mr. Lif, El-P, and Camp Lo make appearances. I have heard that this was intended to be a concept album, but the 'out there', fast paced lyrics don't permit me to figure out what exactly the concept is. If you figure it out, my email is that way ----->

Here are some bonus tracks I had lying around (nothing to do w/ Aesop Rock)

Sorry for the lack of updates lately; Midterms, Phish, and PC issues held me up for a bit.
This is CROOKERS on Radio One's Essential Mix. 2 hours of nonstop hip-hop, dubstep, electro-house, and ridiculous fidget house beats. Crookers will be in the States in April playing NYC, Chi, and SF among others.

Eek-A-Mouse - Wa-Do-Dem (1981)

Some straight rasta shit here. Eek-A-Mouse is one of the creators of the Jamaican toasting / sing-jay style. On this album he lays down two huge hits, Ganja Smuggling and Wa-Do-Dem. Oldschool dancehall vibes that won't quit.

Tosca - No Hassle (2009)

01. My First
02. Elitsa
03. Springer

Richard Dorfmeister traded his partner in Kruder & Dorfmeister for Rupert Huber. Peter Kruder would go on to create Peace Orchestra, his solo project, while Dorfmeister and Huber would continue the ambient dub mindfucks with Tosca. No Hassle is their newest album, and in traditional Dorfmeister fashion, when you hear it you'll shit bricks. Vienna, Austria FTW
